Choose between real or artificial turf

Real turf may require regular maintenance to keep your lawn in the best shape possible, but choosing real turf also offers more than just a transformation to your garden. It offers that authentic freshly cut aroma through the summers, adds quality and aesthetic appeal, is environmentally friendly with a low carbon footprint, costs less to lay and, provided expert maintenance advice is followed, it can truly last a lifetime.

Artificial turf on the other hand allows you to take away a huge proportion of those maintenance chores, as of course - artificial grass doesn't grow, so doesn't need cutting or watering. It's perfect for those who lack the time for lawn care or who are seeking a low-maintenance garden that is safe but still incredibly appealing on the eye. It has a long life expectancy and also cuts out pesticide and fertiliser costs.

The differences between real turf & artificial turf >>

Real turf installation

This is what you can expect from our real turf installation service:

1. Land clearance and site preparation

First, the team will clear the surface of any old existing grass turf, weeds, rocks, stones or other general debris. Any existing hard surfaces, such as decking, pavers or slabs, can also be removed at this first stage.

2. Ground levelling

The next stage will involve levelling the site with the addition or removal of soil where necessary. This will level out any uneven patches and can help reduce the gradient of slopes.

3. Adding topsoil

Once the entire surface is perfectly level the ground will then be covered with a layer of topsoil. This will establish an optimum environment for turf roots to nourish and encourage healthy growth.

4. Turf laying

Next, your chosen turf rolls will be carefully and tightly laid on top of the topsoil in a uniform fashion so that there are no visible gaps across the finished lawn.

5. Lawn edging

The edges of the turf will then be neatly formed to achieve an aesthetic result that works in unison with any other garden features, such as flower beds, patio, rockeries or pond.

6. Our expert advice

Now that your beautiful new lawn is complete and ready to be enjoyed, our expert landscapers will provide you with all the advice and tips you need to ensure your turf is well maintained.

1. Land clearance and site preparation

The area will be cleared of any existing weeds, plants, debris and other unwanted materials. If decking, paving or any other form of hard surface is to be replaced by the artificial turf, this will be carefully removed

2. Ground levelling

Soil will be added or removed as necessary to ensure the ground is completely level, then hard base and sand will be added and tightly compacted.

3. Laying anti-weed membrane

It's important to consider how future weed growth will be prevented when laying artificial turf, so an anti-weed membrane will be installed at the base to help combat this potential issue.

4. Stability

Stability is also important when it comes to artificial turf, so a frame of joist will be installed to help provide this. Sharp sand can also be added to help ensure it's securely fixed to the ground.

5. Laying artificial turf

Finally, the installation of the artificial turf. Depending on the turf type, this may be installed using adhesive to keep it in place, or for certain turf a silica sand application may be enough.

6. Our expert advice

Our landscapers will talk you through what maintenance should be carried out on your particular artificial turf to keep it in the best condition possible for many years to come.

Turfing FAQs

Turfing FAQs

When is the best time of the year to lay new turf?

Turf can be installed at any time of the year, although it's best to at least avoid frosty or extremely hot conditions. Most people tend to opt for the spring or autumn as temperatures can be a little cooler and there is less risk of the turf drying out - but there's nothing stopping us from laying your new lawn in the winter or summer months.

What size are rolls of garden turf?

Lawn turf is typically available in standard one square metre rolls which measure approximately 160cm x 60cm wide with a depth of 2.5cm.

How often should I water my new lawn?

Your new lawn should be watered for the first time immediately after it has been laid. It will be your responsibility to ensure that the new turf remains damp for around two weeks after laying with regular watering, ideally twice a day morning and evening, so that the roots can adequately establish themselves in the soil. Our team will advise you on how to best go about doing this and to check that things are correctly on track following the installation.

How much does turf cost?

The price of turf is depends on the grade quality of turf that is chosen, the quantity that is required to cover the lawn and the distance it needs to travel to reach you - unless you're able to collect and transport it yourself from the suppliers.

Is pre-turfing fertiliser always needed?

If you're having authentic grass turf installed then we would thoroughly recommend the use of a pre-turfing fertiliser. This will make a huge difference to the way the turf establishes itself into the soil. When the turf is originally harvested the roots are removed. Ensuring there is a good base of nutrients will help the grass plants to grow strong healthy roots by encouraging a speedy re-establishment of the root system from the outset. It's these roots that absorb water and nutrients from the soil.

Can you lay new turf on top of old turf?

This can be done, but it is definitely not recommended because you will most certainly not achieve the best results by doing this. If you lay new turf on top of old turf you will experience deterioration of your lawn as the old grass begins to die.

Why should I apply fertiliser to my lawn?

If you're opted for real grass then it's important to understand that turf is alive and just like any other living thing, it needs essentials such as water, food and oxygen. Applying fertiliser means you are literally feeding the lawn, which provides it with the best chance of becoming strong and healthy. The lawn will be able to then build immunity against wear and tear, diseases and unwanted weeds, and it will be more capable of keeping pests at bay.

When should I mow the lawn?

For those who opt for real turf, you'll want to mow the lawn as soon as you notice that the turf has clearly rooted in the soil when you try to lift a corner - usually around the 3 week mark. At this time you can go ahead and set your mower to its highest setting and just clip off the top growth. The first round of mowing should be a simple trim with no more than 25% of the grass plant cut off. You can then gradually reduce the height of the grass with each subsequent cut to the height you would prefer to maintain your lawn.

When can I walk on my new lawn?

We would advise waiting at least three weeks before you walk on your new lawn as this will give it enough time to knit into the soil.
