Concrete Driveways in Cardiff & South Wales

Low maintenance concrete driveways fitted by professional driveway contractors.

Many homeowners favour concrete material for their driveway with good reason. Concrete slabs are incredibly strong and durable in all weather conditions, and also require very little maintenance.

Although concrete may appear dull in appearance, the beauty is that concrete can be transformed with the addition of colour and patterned stamps, helping to create a unique and attractive design that blends perfectly with the exterior of your property. This makes choosing concrete a versatile option and is the reason so many opt for concrete driveways, paths and patios.

Here at RGB Construction we offer professional concrete driveway installation across Cardiff and South Wales, where our team build high quality driveways, paths and patios using the finest concrete materials and techniques. We make the entire process simple for you, by supplying and installing your concrete driveway in a variety of colours and patterns to match or transform any home or garden, all while incorporating new or existing walls, fencing and decking into the landscape.

Why choose a concrete driveway?

Using concrete for your driveway can provide the entrance to your home or any outdoor space with a durable, reliable and low upkeep material that can be coloured or patterned to your preferred taste.

Many homeowners choose to go with a cconcrete driveway, pathway or patio for many reasons, including...

  • High quality - Concrete is incredibly durable, which makes it a useful asset for your property as it will ensure your driveway can withstand every season and every weather condition, year after year, with very little maintenance required.

  • Value for money - When you consider the longevity of a concrete driveway it's easy to see why it offers fantastic value for money. Homeowners who choose a concrete driveway often only ever need to have the driveway done once throughout their time in the property.

  • Strength - Concrete driveways are not just durable, but also very strong. Provided your concrete driveway is professionally installed with the proper base and reinforcement, it will stand up to the heaviest vehicles you are most likely to drive.

Pattern imprinted concrete driveways

RGB Construction are specialists in the installation of pattern imprinted concrete for use on a variety of surface, such as driveways, patios and pathways. The term used to describe this style of concrete driveway can differ between regions, but each term refers to the process of a solid layer of concrete being laid out and then imprinted with a decorative pattern, before being coloured and finally sealed. The patterns tend to mimic the impression of cobbles, crazy styled paving, block paving and much more.

Benefits of pattern imprinted concrete

  • Available in a wide range of unique patterns

  • Available in a wide range of different colours

  • Extremely hard-wearing and weather proof

  • Very little maintenance in comparison to other paving options

  • Remains weed-free and stain resistant

  • Doesn't sink like some other driveway types

  • Appearance doesn't fade like other driveway types

Concrete Driveway FAQs

Concrete Driveway FAQs

How much does it cost to install a concrete driveway?

The cost of your concrete driveway is determined by a calculated method as opposed to a simple square foot price. There are many variables that will determine this overall cost, such as the size of the driveway, how much preparation is involved to ensure the driveway drains properly, the amount of handwork required to install the concrete driveway in areas the equipment can't reach, the required number of concrete mixer trucks among others. For this reason, we can only provide you with an accurate quote by visiting your property and discussing your requirements in more detail.

Does a base need to be installed before laying a concrete driveway?

It is vital that a concrete driveway is installed on top of a solid and stable soil foundation, otherwise it will eventually fail and experience a significantly reduced lifespan. During our consultation we will check the soil in your area to determine whether or not a base will need to be installed before the concrete driveway is installed.

Is drainage planning important when installing a concrete driveway?

Yes, drainage planning is extremely important when planning out the installation of a concrete driveway. This is to ensure that water drains away from the home and garage once the concrete has dried or cured. There should be no standing water on the concrete driveway as this can lead to surface damage such as spalling, which will more than likely lead to complete failure of the driveway. If the drainage planning is not adequate it could result in parts of the driveway having to be completely removed, re-graded and replaced.

How thick should the concrete be for a concrete driveway?

The thickness of the concrete that's used for a driveway will vary depending on the soil it's being installed on and the industry standards within your area. Most concrete driveways are at least 4 inches (10cm) thick. For driveways that will be used by heavier vehicles or that prove difficult to stabilize due to the soil conditions, thicker concrete is likely to be required.

How wide should a concrete driveway be?

A concrete driveway should always be a minimum of 10 feet of width to comfortably accommodate a vehicle. If space allows, it is recommended that wider spacing is used to make it easier to walk in between vehicles that are parked on the driveway.

Are concrete driveways prone to cracking?

Unfortunately, there is no surefire way to ensure that a concrete driveway will crack. In virtually all cases a concrete driveway will eventually begin to show cracks, it's just a matter of where and when. With that said, this shouldn't happen any time soon after the initial installation. If you notice cracks appearing in the concrete within a matter of weeks or just a few months following the installation, contact the builders that you hired immediately as there is most certainly an issue that they need to rectify.

How long does it take to install a concrete driveway?

If the driveway is 100m2 or less, as is the case for most standard residential driveways, and provided the weather remains on our side and access to the driveway is easy, then initial groundwork upon which the concrete driveway is to be laid can be completed within just a few days. With the pouring of the concrete and the finishing off period taken into account, an average time frame from start to finish to install a concrete driveway is typically around 5-7 days.

Will there be a lot of mess when laying the concrete driveway?

Unfortunately there is likely to be a fair bit of mess created while preparing and laying a concrete driveway, although professional contractors will ensure this is kept under control and to an absolute minimum. It's best to keep all windows and doors to the property shut during the process. Splashes of wet concrete can often work it's way onto walls, garages and fences during the installation and should be wiped off immediately. If your concrete is to be imprinted and colour then the colouring and printing process is usually the messiest part.

What should I do to maintain a concrete driveway?

There is very little maintenance required with a concrete driveway and that's one of the main reasons they are such a popular choice. We would simply recommend keeping it clean and reapplying sealer as and when it's needed. How often it's needed will depend on the weather in your area and how often the driveway is used, but as a general rule of thumb most concrete driveways should be resealed every two years or so, or when wear starts to become apparent. We would recommend removing stains such as oil, gasoline and grease as soon as possible, and refrain from using deicing chemicals.
